Parador® CalahorraHotel Marco Fabio Quintiliano |
This new hotel lies at the end of a lateral garden running the length
of the main street of the town.
It is within the old kingdom of Navarra which is now linked to its neighbour of Aragon to the east. Historically however the two kingdoms were very different, Aragon looked towards Catalonia and Levante for its alliances. Navarra, on the other hand, looked towards the west to the Basque region and France. From 1234 it was part of France until annexed by Spain in 1512. The people are fiercely independent and are still willing to fight for their right which has been a tradition for centuries. The plains of the Ebro river are very fertile with a large proportion of the land used for growing the grapes that will become the famous Rioja red wine.
The orange colour of the exterior bricks of this Parador® is reflected in the colour schemes used within the building. The interior furniture reflects the traditional role of the Parador® group in preserving historic buildings by using them as hotels. At Easter, time should be found to watch the religious procession on
Holy Thursday. In early July the adventurous can visit the world-famous
Feasts of San Fermin, in Pamplona. I have been assured, first hand, that
provided you drink enough wine before hand, you do not feel the damage
caused by the bull and when you wake up you are surrounded by pretty nurses
- though they were almost angels!
Calahorra Parador® has fifty two twin bedded rooms, two suites and five single rooms all having a private bathroom. One room is specially equipped for the disabled. Each room has a telephone, television, cable television, safe and a mini bar. Parador® of Calahorra has heating and air conditioning. There is a bar and a restaurant, currency exchange, elevator, satellite television, garden with children playground and a gift shop. There are facilities to hold meetings. Conference and disabled facilities if required. Distance from the nearest airport is approximately 40 kms, the nearest port is 174 kms away and the nearest train station is about 0,5 kms away. The traditional restaurant is now closed. Meals are served at the 'Gastrobar' with an informal but complete offer. Breakfast and event services will still be served at the Parador®.

Stayed in three other Paradores and this is by a huge margin the best food of any of them. Reception and restaurant staff friendly. |

Good stopover location midway between Bilbao and Barcelona,5 minutes off the motorway. Easy to find and easy to park. Staff very professional and polite. Room was large and clean although very creaky. At night the restaurant was closed presumably because of lack of demand. We ate in the bar area. Ok but no atmosphere. My food tasty but very small portion. Pedestrian area adjacent to the hotel is ok with some bars but no restaurants other than snack type food. The rest of the town was fairly workaday and nothing special. Breakfast was very good with quality ingredients. |

Here we were again. Booked late on the outward leg with no issues and arrived early evening 07/08, super helpful personal on reception who must do a long shift still being there at lunchtIme on the following day, salut. A spacious, comfortable, quiet and secluded room, I really couldn't have asked for better and sensibly priced. We had a very relaxed and enjoyable meal in the bar area, serviced by a really attentative attendant. Again I watched as the eating area filled with Spanish clients who obviously respect this as a good, affordable and informal place to eat well. Breakfast was just as you would wish, again with staff who are both friendly, helpful and on top of things. It all works and this hotel is great that's it, recommend it on any day...the next time. |

We stopped again at the Calahora Parador at the end of this July en route to the Costa Blanca. Again we were given a lovely spacious room overlooking the Calahora town Plaza Mayor which was very well appointed, peaceful and comfortable. The staff on both the reception and the bar/restaurant were exceptionally helpful and went out of their way to be of assistance. The evening bar meal we decided upon was very good indeed. Breakfast also was very nice and we were very happy to have again stayed at the hotel, in fact so much that we immediately booked a room for the return leg of our trip from Marina Alta with the same result. We very much like the Hotel and would recommend it without hesitation. Looking forward to the next trip ! |
