Parador® Hotel Chinchon |
The Parador® of Chinchon is in the buildings of the former monastery of St. Mary
of Paradise. This function ceased with the dissolution of the monasteries
and the building was used as a prison before becoming a courthouse.
Its earlier claim to fame is that Felipe V was proclaimed King of Spain in the square at the end of the War of the Spanish Succession. The building was extensively restored and converted for its present use over a period of ten years and opened as a Parador® in 1982. Inside the Chinchon Parador®, the visitor is reminded of the wealth, good eating and gracious living of the monasteries of the period that they were constructed. Very different to poverty and abstinence that is today associated with monastic life. When the building was converted the old cloisters were enclosed in glass looking onto a courtyard with a fountain and shrubs. roses and privets. The interior walls are decorated with Renaissance murals, magnificent
tapestries and classical furniture in the Castile style.
The square is dominated by the parish church where the brother of Goya
was the Parish Priest and it is believed that the altar was decorated by
the great artist.
Although most, outside of Spain, think that they have never heard of the town, a version is internationally known. In the 17th century the Count of Chinchon was the viceroy of Peru. His wife became ill and was treated by a local doctor with the bark of a tree. She brought this amazing medicine back to Europe where it was named after her. We now know it as quinine. The Parador® Chinchon with its peace and the charming town make it a delightful
place to stay rather than the modern hotels and the noise of nearby Madrid.
All the rooms also have a telephone, satellite television, safe, air conditioning and a mini bar. The building has air conditioning and central heating, garage and parking facilities (without security and limited places), wireless internet, conference room, currency exchange, satellite television, lift, restaurant and bar. In the gardens there is a seasonal swimming pool. Distance from the nearest airport is approximately 55 kms and the nearest train station is 21 kms away. Pets are not allowed in the hotel.

This was our first Parador in a small tour this summer. We arrived late and were greeted warmly. The building is wonderful, and the staff really helpful. The setting beside the Plaza Mayor is fantastic. A brilliant town and Parador to match. |

Just returned from a stay in parador Chinchon. Our first stay in a Parador. Could not fault the hotel, the staff from the reception the waiting and cleaning were excellent. The attention to us as guests was one of the best I have had. The building and setting was just perfect. Will use more Paradors in the future. |

My Wife and I have recently spent 2+ weeks touring central Spain staying at Paradores. Chinchon was the highlight of our trip from the moment we arrived. The standard of care was exemplary from the greeting at reception, the quality of the room, the attention of staff and management, the bar, restaurant and garden. The condition of the buildings was fantastic - we were personally shown around by the manager who seemed to be everywhere. The food was excellent and all the staff we dealt with were helpful and obliging. The total 'package' made for a very enjoyable stay. This Parador is one of the better managed hotels I have stayed in anywhere. We will be back - in a few weeks we hope as we are moving to Spain. Ashley |
