Parador® GranadaHotel San Francisco |
This is Spain's most popular Parador® and reservations usually have to
be made months in advance.
The Parador® Granada is part of a palace and mosque built between 1332 and 1354 which was later converted into a Franciscan convent with a charming tiled patio remaining from this conversion. Part of the building was the former chapel where the kings of Spain were buried until their remains were moved to the Royal Chapel where they now lie. The interior of the Parador® merges the Arabic and Christian styles with classic furniture, several portraits, engravings, embroideries etc. The bedrooms are all different and offer views to the famous buildings that make up the remarkable Alhambra site. The dining room has a coffered ceiling and serves local and international
dishes. Meals can be taken on the terrace. There is a separate gluten free menu.
The Albaicin neighbourhood is interesting. This used to be the Arab silk market but now is small streets with shops selling local handicrafts. A very interesting day is to drive to the region of La Alpujarra and visit its villages. These include Lanjaron which has a famous spa, then Carataunas followed by Trevelez which is the highest village in Spain. Various religious and cultural festivals take place in Granada:
Easter and Corpus Christi when there are processions through
the streets;
The Granada Parador® has twenty five twin bedded rooms, ten rooms with a double bed and five suites all with private bathroom. In the rooms there is a telephone, TV canal plus, hair dryer, safe, free internet access, mini bar, kettle and air conditioning. The building has air conditioning and central heating, parking facilities (without security and limited places), piped music, free wireless internet, currency exchange, satellite television, garden, restaurant and bar. Facilities to hold a meeting are available. Pets are not allowed in the Parador®. The larger Alhambra Palace Hotel is a nearby alternative. The Parador® has very limited dates available due to its small size. Distance from the nearest airport is approximately 15 kms, train station is 4 kms away and the nearest port is 127 kms away.

We stayed in the Parador de Granada for two nights in May to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday. What a magical experience it was, one that far exceeded our expectations. Set in the grounds of the Alhambra Palace this accommodation offers discreet luxury with stunning surroundings. We had a superior twin room, half board located in what was the bell tower of the monastery. It was fabulous. Very stylish and comfortable; bath robes etc available; tea/coffee making facilities; free WiFi; balcony overlooking the front gardens; the first floor room was one of the one surrounding in interior courtyard. The food was lovely and although our 'half board' menu was different to the a la carte the choice was authentic Spanish food beautifully presented and served by helpful polite staff. To sit in the restaurant gardens overlooking the Generalife with the smells of the garden wafting over you - honeysuckle, jasmine, herbs - was sublime. All the staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Yes, this was expensive - just over £1000 for the two nights (including wine and champagne with the evening meals and other drinks!) but worth every penny! Honestly. Yes, you could get posher, fancier for the same money, or pay a lot less for the same standard of accommodation but - and a huge but - it will not be the same experience. If you want something to remember and a great memory look no further. Tip: We wanted to have a look around Granada so walked down to the town and caught the tourist bus. Actually due to the old narrow streets this was a train rather than a bus - hop on/hop off until 11.00pm. Did a circular tour of the town and - this was the best bit - included the Alhambra palace, so took us back up to the hotel which is quite a pull up a steep hill! Room Tip: We stayed in room 204. If you are booking, make sure you ask for a room in the old building |

My husband and I stayed there in March. What a lovely place. Being right in the grounds of The Alhambra is a treat history buffs should not miss. The service is lovely, the food is very nice and the gardens and surroundings just an experience to be savored. |
